Supporting Youth Art Programs & More
Waves of the Future packs the state-of-the-art theater with family and friends all supporting the talents of our youth. This isn’t a competition though — everyone is a winner as the students have their opportunity to perform under the bright lights of The Carolina Opry.
With more than 600 students from 16 different schools there is no shortage of talented performers in Horry County and The Chicora Rotary of Myrtle Beach is proud to give them the opportunity to shine on this special occasion.
All proceeds from the event go to non-profit causes, including more than $20,000 given to the Fine Arts programs of Horry County Schools.
“Keeping fine arts programs operating in our schools is imperative as the creative arts are essential to a thriving community. Scientific evidence has proven that youth who participate fine arts are more successful in other subject matters. Yet, while most recognize art’s transformative impacts, its place in K-12 education has become increasingly scarce. Providing this funding to the Horry County Schools Fine Arts Department, allows us to help keep arts alive among our youth.”
Rich Scott, general manager of The Carolina Opry and member of the Chicora Rotary Club
Plus, the event — or “fun-raiser” — provides support for many other local and international projects that the Rotary supports, including Polio eradication, the Dictionary Program, and Project Happy Feet.
Students Compete to Design the Program Cover
Members of the Chicora Rotary Club selected artwork from student artists. The 2024 selection is by Chloe Moody of St. James High School School. She will have her artwork featured on the cover of the event’s digital program and will receive a $100 grant. Submissions from Tariyn Palisin of Forestbrook Middle and Eli Smith of Kingston Elementary will also be recognized during Waves. Thank you to all the students who submitted drawings.
